Montana 2009 - 1

I'm on holiday in Montana with Hayley, Matt and Sam. We're having a wonderful and relaxing time. We're staying in a lakeside cabin on the shores of Flathead Lake (it's for sale, if only I had $900K to spare ;-) ). There are beautiful views out across the lake, the sunrises are gorgeous and the sunsets light up the mountains on the opposite shore. So far, Hayley and the boys have been swimming and Sam and I have been kayaking. Yesterday we went to Glacier National Park which is one of the most amazingly beautiful and stunning places I've ever been. Crossing the continental divide was something else!!

Snowboarding

We have Emma visiting us for Christmas and Hayley arranged for a snowboarding lesson for Emma, Matt, Sam and Me. We went up to Snoqualmie West on Friday for a 2 1/2 hour lesson and then spent some time trying out what we learned after a spot of lunch. We all had a great time and managed to stand up on the board and make our way down some easy slopes. The boys both want to go again, so I'm guessing we'll be back up for more snowboarding and lessons before the end of January. I've posted some pictures in the Snowboarding album.

Getting ready for Christmas

I think we're about ready for Christmas. We've put up the tree, put up lights outside the house. I *think* I've got the presents I planned to buy for Hayley, Matt and Sam. We still have a bunch of wrapping to do, but I think that's about it... Looking forward to the holidays!

New Tyres

I've finally got some new tyres for my CBR 600. I bought BT-014s and I've got them fairly well scrubbed in. They are great tyres, warm up quickly, plenty of grip, now I just need to find so *really* twisty roads so I can scrub them in properly.

At the same time, I also fitted a new chain and sprockets and I have new brake lines and pads to fit, but I'll probably wait until Si is over next April to fit them (unlikely to do much riding between now and then anyhow ). I've also got the parts for the main stand coming this week which will make chain adjustment easier.

Riding the Cat & Fiddle again

I got a lovely surprise during our recent trip back to the UK; our friend Simon had insured his CBR600FT for me and dropped it off at Hayley's Mum & Dad's. Not only that, but Hayley had packed my gloves and boots and Pete Szolkowski lent me his riding jacket and trousers.

I went out on it a few times, racking up around 300 miles or so. Mostly travelling up to Macclesfield to ride the Cat & Fiddle road. I probably did a dozen runs up and down over the week or so I was riding the bike. I also scrubbed Si's new rear Bridgestone-020 in completely on the left side and to within 5mm on the right. Those tyres are awesome!

It was so much fun to ride the Cat & Fiddle again. I'd really missed it. I must find some similar roads out here in WA.

Telford

We went down to Telford to see Matt, Anna, Jo and Tobi today (July 19th). The weather was good, much like yesterday, warm and sunny. It was great to see Matt and Anna's lovely house and their nice garden. Matt and Anna bought our boys water balloon catapults as birthday presents so we went to the local park and had some fun with those. Then we collected Jo, their eldest from school and I passed out for a coupl of hours before dinner. After a lovely dinner, we headed back to the hotel just before Jo and Tobi's bedrime.

Trip to Cirencester

We travelled down to Cirencester from Shrewsbury today ( July 18th ). The journey was very smooth and uneventful. We swung by the house the kids first lived in, in Woodmancote. It's not changed much, many of the plants Hayley planted have grown to maturity, and there is now a grassed area at the back of the house. We then went to visit some friends. We had a lovely lunch of bacon rolls at Waitrose, then went for a walk in Cirencester Park, then potterered around Cirencester for a little while, buying books, fudge and Nintendo DS accessories before dropping by Matt's old elementary school to pick up our friends daughter. Then back to our friends house where we hung out until around 9pm, having played in the garden, the kids played on the PS2 and we had a lovely dinner of chicken, roast potatoes and vegetables. The weather was lovely, nice warm sunshine. The journey back was as smooth and easy as the journey down. All in all, a lovely, relaxing day. It was lovely to see our friends and catch up a bit with what's been happening in life. Perhaps next time we visit the UK, we'll spend a bit more time in The Cotswolds.

Bike Pictures

Went out for a quick blast on the CBR600 around noon today. The weather is lovely and it was a very pleasant ride. Decided the bike needed a wash when I got back and then Hayley waxed and polished it when I'd finished washing it. I've posted some pictures in the CBR600F3 gallery

Views from the office

I'm lucky enough to have a window office with a reasonable view of some of the Cascade mountain range. The view changes from day-to-day. I've started a photo album, I'll post pics every now and again...

Passed Bike Test

I passed my motorcycle skills test this weekend. It was very wet on the way down to the test area, thankfully, by the time the test started it had stopped raining and the guys conducting the test had swept most of the standing water off the course. The test consists of 4 parts;
  1. Drive up the course, make a sharp left turn, staying within a set of lines, drive down the other side of the course and come to a stop with your front wheel in a rectangular box.
  2. Drive up the course, weaving in and out of a set of cones about 12' apart, then come back down the course and do a U-turn keeping within an open rectangle.
  3. Accelerate to about 15mph, stay at a constant speed and then after passing a pair of cones, come to a stop as quickly as possible.
  4. Accelerate to about 15mph, stay at a constant speed and then after passing a pair of cones, swerve right, avoiding a line drawn on the course.

I had practised 1 and 2 the week before, which helped somewhat and I think the cone weave and U-Turn pieces were the hardest. That said, it was all quite nerve-wracking and I was glad to get it out of the way.

So now I just need to take my form saying I've passed to a licensing office and get them to update my driving license with the motorcycle endorsement.
